Edward Snowden, the NSA whistleblower has described government mass surveillance programs as “fundamentally dangerous”.
Snowden spoke in a video message to a conference about the impact on journalism of government surveillance held at the Guardian last week.
Speakers at the conference, organised by the National Union of Journalists, discussed the alarming effect on reporters of routine access to communications data.
Gavin Millar QC of Doughty Street Chambers also spoke at the conference about the Bureau’s case which he is helping take to the European Court of Human Rights. The Bureau is asking the court to rule on whether existing legislation offers adequate protection to journalists’ communications.
