£217m for operations that never happened
Under “take or pay” contracts, the NHS allotted private providers a set sum at the beginning of each year, in order to complete a fixed number of operations in health clinics run under its Independent Sector Treatment Centre, ISTC, scheme.
But the Bureau has found that of the 31 first wave treatment centres, just four were performing all contracted operations. In contrast, nine performed less than 75 percent. In total, the government paid £217m for operations that never happened.The table below shows the amount overspent for each treatment centre.
