The Bureau in running for 4 Press Gazette British Journalism Awards
A new award for quality journalism
The Bureau of Investigative journalism has made the final selection in four categories for the first Press Gazette British Journalism Awards.
Uniquely for a national journalism prize of this kind, the awards emphasise journalism which is interesting to the public and in the public interest.
The Bureau’s Chris Woods is up for Investigation of the year for his work on drone warfare. Nick Mathiason is short listed for the Business journalist of the year award for his work on the financial lobby. Emma Slater’s raft of work has earned her a place on the shortlist for New journalist of the year award and the Bureau as an entity is up for an Innovation of the year award.
Press Gazette editor Dominic Ponsford said: ‘The finalists for the first British Journalism Awards prove comprehensively that there are two sides to this story. The standard of entries was superb, with the investigation of the year category alone attracting more than 40 high-quality entries. These shortlists should make anyone who characterises all journalists as gutter hacks eat their words. They are proof that we are part of a noble profession that now, as much as ever, aspires to and achieves the highest ethical and professional standards.’
The leading nominees for the awards included The Times and The Sunday Times with six nominations apiece. Then the Bureau and the Independent with four. The BBC and Getty Images received three nominations each.
