Bureau stories shortlisted for three One World Media Awards

The Bureau’s Angus Stickler reports from Ethiopia

Two of the Bureau of Investigative Journalism  international investigations have made the shortlist for the prestigious One World Media Awards.

A BBC Newsnight documentary revealing shocking misappropriation of development funds in Ethiopia has been nominated for a Television Award while ‘The 1,000,000 Ghosts of Baghdad’, which reported the true scale of the number of unidentified dead following the Iraqi conflict, is in the running for both the Press Award and Popular Features Award.

The Newsnight documentary, aired last August, was the result of a joint undercover investigation by the Bureau and Newsnight team. Visiting poverty stricken villages across rural Ethiopia, the team of journalists posed as tourists to uncover compelling evidence of high level corruption and human rights abuses.

‘The 1,000,000 Ghosts of Baghdad’, published last July in the Mail on Sunday’s Live Magazine gave witness to the many Iraqi families who were still searching for news on missing loved ones. traumatised by ‘a life defined by death’.

“One World recognition of the Bureau’s work is greatly appreciated,” said the Bureau’s editor Iain Overton. “Most media companies either specialise in print or television but to be recognised for our journalism in both categories reflects the ambitions of the Bureau and the changing nature of how journalism is communicated and distributed.”

The One World Media Awards, set up by the One World Media charity, showcases outstanding coverage of the developing world across multimedia and themed categories.

Overall winners in each class will be announced at the One World Media Awards ceremony, on 8 May at Kings Place, London.
