Budget cuts, super injunctions and apathy are just a few of the hurdles facing investigative journalists. With short turn around times, more broadcast hours to fill and increasingly picky audiences, editors face a difficult decision when it comes to investing in lengthy projects.
The Independent looks at the challenges facing the discipline, and hails the arrival of the Bureau of Investigative Journalism: “These are relatively dry subjects. They’re not trying to catch a footballer sleeping with a prostitute; they are hard, time-consuming investigations,” says the Bureau’s Editor Iain Overton.
